Be the Change Eco-Challenge: Specifics Recap

We are almost at the halfway point for the Be the Change Eco-Challenge.  We are extremely appreciative of those who have participated thus far.  We would love to hear your feedback on what you think of the challenge overall.  

Still confused on how to enter? Not sure what its all about?  Let us break it down for you because YOU are the change and we need you to participate.

We know a lot of you already live a fairly sustainable life on a daily basis, so these things are not too much of a "challenge."  But for others, these things are still foreign.  Our goal in creating this challenge is to get dialog started on what people are doing on a daily basis to be sustainable, what is working, what do you like, what parts of being GREEN do you find difficult, etc.  Those of you that are GREEN-savvy can share ideas that will help others that may not have many ideas on what it is to live sustainably.

Lets start the conversation - leave us a blog comment, Facebook or tweet us! That is all it takes for a chance to WIN a Conscious Box!  :)

We want YOU to BE THE CHANGE.  As the first RMOG poster explains, the Real Meaning of GREEN is about Education.  All it takes to help make the world a better place to live starts with spreading education on sustainability.  And the beauty of social media makes this an easier task for us all.

Points: The challenge goes beyond completing the task - we want to hear about it!  We will be awarding points to those who share with us what they are doing to complete the daily challenges. The person with the most points at the end of the month will be named the winner and mailed a prize.

  1. For yesterday's "Travel Green Tuesday" I opted for no travel at all. I needed some things from the grocery store, but instead of hopping in my car to go get them, I called my husband and had him pick them up while he was already out.

  2. For "Waste Not Want Not Wednesday" I took my kitchen scraps out to the compost bin and gave it a spin! That diverted garbage will now become an awesome soil amendment to replace the wear and tear of erosion and leaching from all this rain!

  3. For Earth-Friendly Foods Friday I will be enjoying fresh eggs from my very own chickens. There's no burning of fossil fuels to get them to market and the chickens help control the weed and insect pest population without toxic herbicides and pesticides.

  4. Today is "Earth Friendly Foods Friday" in the Be the Change Eco-Challenge. My little one and I are participating by eating organic bananas and drinking organic almond milk. Eating organic helps keep hormones out of our water supply.

  5. Cherri, thank you so much for the wonderful feedback and content on what you do to be GREEN and fulfill the challenges we have set forth for the Be The Change Eco-Challenge. You really ARE the change the world needs and are setting a great example for others.

    I love that you choose not to travel at all when you can, that you compost regularly, and it is so exciting to hear that you have your own chickens - wow! Have you found it to be a learning curve on teaching yourself to take care of the chickens? How many do you have?

  7. Kristen - In February we moved to a small homestead in Virginia (12.6 wooded acres adjacent to the George Washington National Forest in the Shenandoah Valley). One of the first things I did was get some chickens. We have five. We did free range them until very recently. They kept getting into a neighbors flower garden, so we had to fence them in. But we love having them, and taking care of them is super easy. I recommend it to anyone whose neighborhood allows them. It is a great first step to becoming closer to your food source. In addition to the eggs they provide, they eat hundreds of bugs each day and I compost their manure for the garden.

  8. I have had sinus problems all my life. I used to go through almost two boxes of tissues a week until I finally said, "No more!" I now keep one box of tissues in the house for guests, and I use old-fashioned cloth handkerchiefs. They take up no extra room in a load of laundry that I'm already doing, and on top of helping to save the earth, I save a ton of money! So for "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Saturday" I'm advocating the use of handkerchiefs instead of tissues.

  9. I have a one-year-old, and I decided even before getting pregnant that I would use cloth diapers. Disposables just weren't an option for us due to environmental concerns. I also made all my own reusable cloth diaper wipes. I love them. So for Saturday's "Be the Change Eco-Challenge" (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle Saturday), I choose cloth diapers and diaper wipes.

  10. For "Meatless Monday," I'm opting for granola for breakfast, soup for lunch (no animal broth included!), and a pile of veggies for dinner. This will not only help animals and the environment, it'll help me take better care of my body overall!

  11. For Meatless Monday I'm serving up spicy black bean burgers for dinner. Yum! If you haven't tried them, you should. They are delicious!

  14. Hi Jordan, thank you for joining the challenge and sharing your activity for Travel Green Tuesday! It's great when you have the option of walking to lunch instead of driving there. Plus, where I work, it actually takes less time to walk than beat the lunch-rush congestion around my office.

  15. I don't use very many paper towels because I do not like disposable paper products. However, sometimes a paper towel is just the best solution. When I do use them, I use the Bounty Select-a-Size. The individual sheets are much smaller and keep you from using more than you need. So for "Waste Not Want Not Wednesday," I am using and endorsing Bounty Select-a-Size paper towels ... but sparingly, of course!

  16. Just a few words about yesterday's "Travel Green Tuesday" ... I am a telecommuter and have worked from home for more than 20 years. (Yay!) I currently live in the country where it is a minimum of a 20-minute drive to get to the nearest grocery store or restaurant. Because of this, I don't "travel" very often. I tend to save up my needs and wants and try to fulfill them all in one weekly trip. So it's difficult for me to participate in the challenge on Tuesdays because in all fairness, the farthest I go is to walk my dogs!

  17. I found a way to celebrate yesterday's "Travel Green Tuesday" after all ... today I published an article on Yahoo! News about tomorrow being "Dump the Pump Day" which encourages people to leaves their keys in the drawer and use public transportation.

  18. For Test it out Thursday I am going to try something I saw last night on Facebook. It is a way to "Recharge your Towels" without detergent. You wash them in hot water and one cup of vinegar. Then you run them through again with hot water and 1/2 cup of baking soda. It obviously cuts down on detergent by using more natural products and is supposed to make your towels more absorbent. BUT - it does use more water and energy. So instead of the 14-minute wash cycle that I normally use for my towels, I am going to use two 7-minute cycles. I'll have to decide if saving the detergent and making my towels more absorbent is worth the extra water usage.

  19. For "Waste not Wednesday," I used the reusable Keurig cups at work instead of the disposable ones. The reusable K cups are much cheaper than the disposable ones and they cut down waste in our environment.

  20. For "Earth Friendly Food Friday," I'm treating myself to a Starbucks Protein Box! Yum! Starbucks is a huge supporter of Earth-friendly foods and local businesses. The protein boxes come with an organic peanut butter honey packet, a muesli roll, a hard boiled egg, apples, and grapes.

  21. For "Earth-Friendly Foods Friday" I will be going through my pantry checking for anything containing palm oil. I will make a list and pledge to not purchase them again.
