Thank
Goodness it's Monday (TGIM)!! Why? Because it's Meatless Monday, of
course!
Below is some great information about Meatless Monday from www.meatlessmonday.com, a non-profit initiative of The Monday Campaign. In association with Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Health, the organization provides information on why Meatless Monday is important, as well as recipes to help people reduce their meat consumption by 15%, for the health of the planet and for their own health.
DID YOU KNOW?
Meatless Monday really started during World War I, as the
U.S. Food & Drug Administration urged families to reduce their consumption
of meat and wheat. "Meatless Monday" and "Wheatless
Wednesday" were promoted to aid the war effort. Through the help of
Herbert Hoover, more than 13 million families signed the petition and pledge
for the nation's meatless and wheatless conservation days. “Americans
began to look seriously into the question of what and how much they were
eating. Lots of people discovered for the first time that they could eat less
and feel no worse – frequently for the better,” as stated by a 1929 Saturday
Evening Post article.
WHY
MEATLESS?
"Research
has shown that reducing meat intake may reduce your risk of chronic preventable
conditions like cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. The
occasional meatless meal can also help cut your carbon footprint and save
precious resources like fresh water and fossil fuel." (The Monday Campaigns,
Inc, 2013).
WHY
MONDAY?
"Multiple
studies have shown that periodic health prompts lead to positive behavior
change. Monday is the beginning of the week, making it the perfect time to
reevaluate our choices and set our intentions for the coming days. With a
Meatless Monday, you have a scheduled, recurring reminder to start your week
off on a nutritious note. And if this Monday passes you by, next week is
another opportunity to focus on health!" (The Monday Campaigns, Inc, 2013).
